You’ve Got This, Arjuna! by Lissa Coffey

AdiDev Press is known for beautifully illustrated books that bring deep mythological and indigenous literature in simple forms so that they are accessible to young children. You’ve Got This, Arjuna! by Lissa Coffey, also a fun tale is based on a modern-day version of the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna from the Bhagavad Gita.

When I picked up the book, I expected a simplified version of the Gita. However, as it turns out, it is the essence of the philosophy that plays out in a completely modern setting. Hence, we have Arjuna quite confused on the eve of a really big football match.

He is riddled with self-doubt and fear. Arjuna starts to wonder whether he should play or not. But then Krishna steps in and the book pans out in a series of verses that motivate, educate and inspire the boy to play the game. The message is simple- play the game. Do the action, and don’t worry about the fruits of the action.

The illustrations by Rajesh Nagulakonda resonate with the modern conception and setting of the story, The relatable characters and setting makes it an interesting book to read for young children. It’s also a good way to introduce young kids to the characters of Krishna and Arjuna. You’ve Got This, Arjuna! by Lissa Coffey is apt for 4- to 7-year-olds.
