Looks like this book was a gift from a father to his daughter. I wanted to explore the works of #simonedebeauvoir and I chanced upon this old copy of Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter in a book exchange. There is a little note on the first page, where the father (my deduction) writes “On your birthday. The title of this, the first volume suggests it’s appropriateness “.

I guess this would have been a gift to a dutiful daughter who loved reading! It’s dated March 1975.

Changing upon old copies and especially those with little notes like this seem to give the book a backstory of its own... that runs parallel to the actual content!!!

The book is a @penguinukbooks publication that ultimately landed up at the @litlivemumbai book exchange in 2019!

History is often considered (and wrongly so) drab and boring. However, Kirsten Edwards is all set to change that. Choosing timelines as a prism to teach history, her Timeline Cards and Posters make history come alive. Kirsten conceptualized the picture cards to infuse engagement in her history home-schooling lessons. Inspired by the writings of Charlotte Mason, the idea grew and took wings. 🔹 The result is an entire system of History Timeline cards that parents and teachers can incorporate in their lessons. “If teachers are reading one of the living history books, e.g., Story of the World and teaching chronological history, it would be a great resource in the classroom. The Timeline Poster could be put on the wall for the children to add cards to and reference,” says Kirsten. 🔹 There are factors that makes these cards versatile to use. Firstly, they are intuitive. All the hard work of pre-reading, researching and working out which timeline entries to include for that reading has been done already. What the parent has to do is read the chapter, cut out the corresponding cards for that chapter, and place them on the timeline. The pictures on the cards give history a visual reference and many of the pictures are actual photos/paintings/artefacts from that time era. Kirsten has taken time to choose good pictures. The cards are good for helping a child leap into a little more history. They can write or talk about a card which interests them and the cards can be used to help jolt their memory about the previous lesson. 🔹 The Timelines help parents and teachers engage children in history. They can see with their own eyes how history links together and progresses over time. Visuals like timelines and maps are fascinating to study and will appeal to adults and children alike.
