This is a book that will start you off on that journey of viewing your life in the context of your past. 🔹 All families have skeletons in the closet. The problem begins when these become monsters waiting to unleash trouble. I would urge the reader of this book to give a thought to the possibilities abound when we step outside the boundaries set by others’ narratives! I would also urge them to look at narratives written for them by others….and ensure that in the process of not betraying their loved ones, they don’t end up betraying themselves. That is, in my opinion, being Educated!

🤔Catch-22 Coming from the novel of the same name, written by Joseph Heller, a Catch-22 is a situation where one is trapped by two contradictory conditions. It is a paradox or dilemma.

The working title of the novel was Catch-18. The theme of the novel pertains to the mindlessness of war.
🔹
The term was a reference to a military regulation that keeps the pilots in the story flying one suicidal mission after another. The only way to be excused from flying such missions is to be declared insane!
The book appeared in 1961 and the name was changed to Catch-22 because around the same time Leon Uris’s bestselling novel Mila 18 was published. To avoid numerical confusion, Heller and his editor decided to change 18 to 22!

While the novel was popular, the phrase outlives it all. Looks like this book was a gift from a father to his daughter. I wanted to explore the works of #simonedebeauvoir and I chanced upon this old copy of Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter in a book exchange. There is a little note on the first page, where the father (my deduction) writes “On your birthday. The title of this, the first volume suggests it’s appropriateness “.

I guess this would have been a gift to a dutiful daughter who loved reading! It’s dated March 1975.

Changing upon old copies and especially those with little notes like this seem to give the book a backstory of its own... that runs parallel to the actual content!!!

The book is a @penguinukbooks publication that ultimately landed up at the @litlivemumbai book exchange in 2019!
